Introduction:

Today the energy scenario is mostly dependent on fossil fuels. But it is becoming scarce day by day. To provide secured energy to everyone, now it is time to start looking at the sun for alternate source of energy for sustainability. Fortunately our country is blessed with rich Solar and Renewable Energy. Therefore, attempts should be made to harness this unending source of clean energy for the benefit of our people to achieve energy independence. A well balanced and accelerated adoption of solar energy resources would however require an adequate number of well trained and competent personnel for solar energy resource assessment, solar technology development, modification, digestion adaptation and application. Keeping these in mind, Renewable Energy Research Centre (RERC) and Faculty of Engineering and Technology, University of Dhaka in collaboration with Bangladesh Solar Energy society is going to start Short Courses on “Renewable (Solar) Energy and its Applications”. The objective of this course is to bring together the researchers, students, financiers, investor, hobbyist, industrialists and policy makers from different institutes and organizations under single fold of Renewable Energy Technology. We believe that it would create enough scopes to implement it in Bangladesh and beyond. The aim is to provide training on the selected aspects of renewable energy applications. The rural and urban, commercial and industrial prospects of renewables will also be touched. Hopefully this will serve as a special source of information and inspiration for the interested individuals in this field.

About the organizations:

The Renewable Energy Research Centre (RERC) of Dhaka University is actively working on Research, Development and Dissemination activities on Renewable Energy Technologies (RET) from the early 80s.The Centre also playing the pioneering role for the promotion of Solar Energy in Bangladesh. RERC is working relentlessly for the promotion of solar thermal, solar photovoltaic applications and maintains the only solar energy dissemination park in the country, popularly known as “Energy Park” at the Dhaka University campus. The main objective of this centre is to organize research activities in the field of Solar, Wind and other alternative sources of energy; to encourage research projects for utilization of renewable energy in Bangladesh; to train co-ordinate and establish links between students, scientists, engineers, stakeholders and policy makers, individuals working in institutions inside and outside the country. Every year this centre along with Bangladesh Solar Energy Society organizes national seminars, exhibitions and training as a part of its annual activities. Students from related departments are doing their M.Sc, MPhil and PhD research and thesis work with the support of this centre.

The training courses have been initiated as a social responsibility to alleviate energy crisis.

Short course on Energy Efficiency

Duration: 6 days (3:00 pm to 7:00 pm)

Date: 25-30 October 2008

Center for Energy Studies, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) jointly organized a short course on Energy Efficiency form October 25-30 , 2008.

The Centre for Energy studies, BUET works at promoting education and research, organizing seminars, symposia, training                 workshops,        short courses and outreach programs    and publishing journal, monographs, and books on energy related interdisciplinary matters.

Energy has been the primary input behind the evolution of the human civilization up to the new millennium marked with astounding technological developments. However, while the demand for energy is ever escalating the commercially viable and exploitable resources for bulk energy are getting shrunk in the world. Therefore, alongside ensuring access to energy for all, affordable and pragmatic technical means need to be devised and implemented so that energy can be saved through reducing the consumption.

With the above view in mind, Centre for Energy Studies of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) jointly organized a short course on Energy Efficiency.

Objectives

To provide the energy professionals an insight into the importance, methodologies and financial benefits of implementing energy efficiency programs in existing or planned garments and textile industries, and pharmaceutical industries and electrical mechanical industries, plants, hotels, shopping malls, high rise buildings, etc.
