Solar Energy Programme
Solar PV powered Cellular Base Transceiver Station (BTS) in Bangladesh
Bangladesh having the potentials of solar PV market and telecommunication sector is the target area. This is a good news for global Solar PV System company's, because of the fastest growing ICT network, e.g. 6 Cellular (GSM/CDMA) operators, Fixed wireless operators (urban/rural area), PSTN (Urban/Rural), Internet data network (Optical fiber/Wi-Fi/Wi-Max) operators, Nationwide Optical Fiber Telecommunication Transmission Network operators, VoIP Operators, Call centers, Rural Internet service centers by cellular operators etc. all having thousands of BTS/Transmission hubs and serving in remote rural villages/towns, which providing modern telecommunication infrastructures. Within the bureaucratic grip, ICT growing up in the last mile and the job mostly being taken care by private entrepreneurs. Bangladeshi people now enjoying up-to-date ICT network and it is all about ICT entrepreneurs, who bridging the last mile gap with Cable/Wi-Fi & Wi-Max /optical fiber data network.

But the main hurdle for the growth of telecommunication sectors being identified as frequent power cut/reckless power generation and supply system. In summer months, worst power disaster hits telecommunications all over the country and most of BTS/Transmission hubs/stations being powered by diesel generator.
Confronting the above issues and seeking power solution from alternate sources already harnessed by telecom operators. They have deployed solar PV system for power backup and replacled diesel generators although the initial cost of solar PV system is high. On the other hand cell phone charging in rural areas another hurdle from power cut.
To address this problem international companies having good scope to invest in this cluster so that telecommunication companies can use alternative power sources. Similarly small solar PV powered system can also benefits rural/remote rural people to charge their cell phone/hand sets.
Grameenphone sets up solar-powered base stations

Solar PV Powered BTS at Paharpur under Hobiganj District

Solar PV Powered BTS at Paharpur under Hobiganj District
Grameenphone Ltd. has recently installed two hybrid solar-powered base station sites in
The solar-powered base station is globally quite a new concept and has been installed in only a few countries so far. The two sites, set up on an experimental basis, at Paharpur in Habiganj district ( installed capacity 8.25kWp) have been designed to discharge power to the base stations for three consecutive days, without any sunlight to recharge. This backup system will ensure Grameenphone’s network availability in case of any prolonged inadvertent shutdown of the national power grid.
“This is another pioneering initiative by Grameenphone. It will not only help overcome the electricity supply problem but it will also be good for the environment,” observes Grameenphone CEO Anders Jensen. “If these pilot installations are successful we will set up more such solar-powered base stations in other areas of the country in the near future.”
The two projects have been implemented with technical assistance from Rahimafroz and Add Power respectively. While setting up these solar-powered base stations are quite expensive, the cost of maintenance of the sites is quite low.
Grameenphone has the largest network with the widest coverage around the country, bringing 98 percent of the population under the coverage of its network. The company recently commissioned its 10,000th base station. These 10,000 base stations are located in about 5,700 sites around the country.
The entire Grameenphone network is also EDGE/GPRS enabled, allowing GP subscribers to access the Internet from anywhere within its coverage area.
The company has so far invested more than BDT 10,700 crore (USD 1.6 billion) to build the network infrastructure since its inception in 1997. It has invested over BDT 3,100 crore (USD 450 million) during the first three quarters of the current year while BDT 2,100 crore (USD 310 million) was invested in 2006 alone.
Grameenphone is implementing an aggressive roll-out program by installing new network elements with an emphasis on maintaining quality service. A number of steps are being taken to identify the problems spots in the network in order to constantly improve quality.
Special efforts are being taken to constantly monitor and ensure network quality in the urban areas. In
Grameenphone Orders Solar-Powered Base Stations
Bangladesh based operator, Grameenphone has commissioned a solar-powered base station from Huawei. Huawei will install its base stations, using a solar and diesel generator hybrid power solution to provide mobile connectivity in rural areas. The base stations will primarily be powered by harnessing solar energy without having to be linked to an electricity grid. The diesel generator will be used as a backup.
"As Bangladesh' s key telecom operator and a responsible corporate citizen, GP is committed to investing in green mobile network," said Mr. Oddvar Hesjedal, Chief Executive Officer of GP. "Huawei' s competitive green power solution helps us utilize renewable energy and reduce our CO2 emissions while providing even better broadband services to our customers."
Once deployed, the new system will improve GP' s network performance by preventing service interruption, a previously persistent challenge in Bangladesh due to power instability. It will also lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, and reduce the cost of refueling and site visits, thereby lowering GP' s total cost of ownership. These savings will offset GP' s capital investment in just two-to-three years.
