4. Brief Introduction of the Organization :

BRAC With a vision of "a just, enlightened, healthy and democratic Bangladesh free from hunger, poverty, environmental degradation and all forms of exploitation based on age, sex, religion and ethnicity," BRAC started as an almost entirely donor funded, small-scale relief and rehabilitation project to help the country overcome the devastation and trauma of the Liberation War. Today, BRAC has emerged as an independent, virtually self-financed paradigm in sustainable human development. It is the largest in the world employing 97,192 people, with the twin objectives of poverty alleviation and empowerment of the poor. Through experiential learning, BRAC today provides and protects livelihoods of around 100 million people in Bangladesh. Diagnosing poverty in human terms and recognising its multidimensional nature, BRAC approaches poverty alleviation with a holistic approach. BRAC's outreach covers all 64 districts of the country and furthermore, has been called upon to assist a number of countries including Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

From the time of its modest inception in 1972, BRAC recognised women as the primary caregivers who would ensure the education of their children and the subsequent inter-generational sustainability of their families and households. Its comprehensive approach combines Microfinance under BRAC's Economic Development programme with Health, Education and other Social Development programmes, linking all the programmes strategically to counter poverty through livelihood generation and protection.

Solar Energy programme under Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) :

BRAC (Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee)  was established as a relief organization in 1972 after the Liberation War. It has evolved into the country's largest development organization with its objectives of "Alleviation of Poverty and Empowerment of the Poor."  Its wide range of programs and projects in areas including education, health care, agriculture, poultry, research, crafts, technology, commerce printing, publishing, dairy, and micro credit banking are dispersed throughout the country. More than 50,000 out of the 86,000 of Bangladesh's villages have BRAC projects, employing more than 25,000 full time and 34,000 part time workers. BRAG's 1998 budget was U8$ 131 million, 39% of which came from donors and 61% from BRAG's own income. The percentage of self-reliance has been growing steadily over the years.

Bangladesh : The Crisis and the Scope

The energy scenario is worsening by the day. The fuel import bill is over 70% of the country's total export earnings. The only sizable fossil fuel reserve of natural gas is likely to be exhausted by 2010. Diesel generators are widely used, but these are highly polluting and have a short and costly life-cycle, requiring frequent maintenance and costly parts. The inadequate and unreliable electricity supply, scarcity of firewood and cooking gas, pollution, and rising costs have led to a crisis which is impossible to be solved by relying on nonrenewable sources and manipulating the power supply.

The Scope: Bangladesh is richly endowed with renewable energy. In addition to ample light and heat, the hundred plus miles long coastal areas and hilly sections provide ample wind for wind turbines; waterways of varied forms and speed provide ample wave and gravity driven water flow for ecologically balanced hydroelectric generators; and the lush vegetation provides ample photosynthesis and biomass for fuel for a variety of purposes. Also, more than two-thirds of the land area is grid free where decentralized applications of various renewable energy technologies have been proven to be the most cost-effective options for generating electricity and heat. The potential of these renewable energy sources remains practically untapped.

BARC Solar Energy Program:

BRAC Solar Energy Program for Sustainable Development was launched in December 1997. An integrated and multipurpose program, its projects spread across the country in a wide variety of settings including households,

Solar Home Lighting System

BRAC and other NGO offices, training centers, schools, health clinics, cyclone shelters, a weather monitoring station, a government rest house and income generating centers such as carpentry, tailoring shops, cloth dyeing and printing shops, leather workshops, restaurants and grocery shops. stand- alone PV systems and wind turbines for solar electricity, Hot Box cookers and biogas plants have been installed in various regions throughout the country. In addition, the program has also installed 2 PV- utility interactive systems and 6 PV-wind turbine hybrid systems pioneering in Bangladesh. Projects with solar thermal micro-hydroelectric generators, biogas electricity and are soon be implemented.

With support from IDCOL/WB/GEF/GTZ/Kfw BRAC Foundation installed capacity 36,631 Solar Home System (May 18, 2008)  Stand alone Solar Home System to provide electricity in rural off-grid areas.

The Transition  of the Renewable Energy Path

Income Generation Activities

Since the 1980s, numerous renewable energy projects and ventures have been implemented at the NGO (non-1 organization), governmental, academic, private and commercial  levels. These make up a promising sign. But a more massive  expansion is urgently needed o transform the country's worsening   energy crisis, thereby the economy, towards a sustainable  prosperous future.

The BRAC Solar Energy Program looks to the future major expansion plans. These include: One Electrification Program to provide  environmentally responsive electricity through one lac systems; The BRAC Solar Energy Complex, relying I energy sources, to serve the comprehensive fun program's headquarters, the Solar Energy Institute f research, training, planning and consultation, and a c model; 5000 Hot Box cookers: and 50,000 biogas program will continue to build upon its foundation action, research and innovation towards sustainable soluions.

Until June 2004, BRAC commercially distributed  following :
